Background of the Study
Inter-communal disputes in Nigeria have been a persistent issue, often driven by competition over resources, land disputes, or political tensions. Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area (LGA) in Nasarawa State has witnessed several inter-communal conflicts, particularly between the Eggon and other ethnic groups such as the Alago, Gwandara, and Tiv. These disputes have led to significant loss of life, displacement of people, and damage to infrastructure, thus impacting local governance and social stability.
Efforts to mediate and resolve these conflicts have been varied, involving both government and non-governmental actors, such as traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organizations. However, the effectiveness of these mediation strategies in achieving lasting peace remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the mediation strategies used in Nasarawa Eggon LGA to resolve inter-communal disputes, assessing their successes, challenges, and potential for long-term conflict resolution.
Statement of the Problem
Inter-communal conflicts in Nasarawa Eggon LGA have persisted despite various conflict mediation strategies. Traditional conflict resolution mechanisms, governmental interventions, and third-party mediation have all been employed, but violence and tensions continue to plague the region. The effectiveness of these strategies in fostering sustainable peace is questionable, as many disputes remain unresolved or flare up again after a period of calm. This study will evaluate the impact of these strategies on reducing conflict and improving inter-communal relations in Nasarawa Eggon LGA.
